Irritable bowel syndrome
We get a lot of patients who have just been diagnosed with IBS or who have been taking allopathic medications for IBS, coming to us asking if we can help them.
How common is IBS?
Around 10 to 20% of the population suffers from IBS in India.
Symptoms of IBS:
People with IBS usually complain that they have to go to the washroom several times, I get up in the morning go pass the stool, it's loose, it comes out with a force and sometimes it is explosives stools. I come back, within half an hour I feel like passing stools again, I get some discomfort and cramps in the stomach and I feel like passing stools again.
I have to pass stools immediately after my breakfast or halfway through my breakfast, lunch, tea, or dinner. They have bloating, discomfort and rumbling sound in the stomach. They are in the middle of something and suddenly they feel an urgency to pass stools or there are severe cramps and you have to rush to the toilet, after passing stools you feel better. These are typically the symptoms of IBS.
Some people with IBS have loose stools for two days and the next 2-3 days they're constipated, there are alternate loose stools and constipation.
Some people pass stools about four to five times before going to the office, functions, or examination centre. I cannot get out of my house until I go four or five times and if I go out I search for washrooms around me. Over some time, this becomes a psychological issue. They do not feel comfortable going out of the house with just one or two stools. They want to make sure that they have completely evacuated their bowels before they go out of the house. So from a disease, this becomes a habit.
IBS is a lot more psychological than physical. It starts as a physical problem, but it eventually becomes an emotional problem. For most people going several times to the toilet has become a habit.
Allopathic approach:
In allopathy, they put you on general medicines for digestion. Sometimes, they put you on antidepressants, there is not much that they can do about it.
I have written an article about IBS about 20 years back and since then I have been flooded with patients with IBS and there are hundreds of IBS patients I have been able to help.
Homeopathic approach:
Once you start homeopathic medications, over a period of time, the frequency and urgency to pass stools come down, the consistency of the stool improves, bloating and gases come down. Within few months you'll be able to manage on your own without any medication.
What happens if you don't treat IBS?
If you leave it alone, it keeps getting worse. Your stool frequency increases, you have severe cramps, bloating and gases. It becomes a huge task to just get out of the home.
Diet restrictions:
I always suggest my patients to stay away from milk and dairy products because I think the lactose in the milk is what causes most of the problems. Avoid cheese, paneer, coffee, and tea. You can have black coffee, black tea, or green tea. Once you start getting better, you can have buttermilk and curd.
Do's and Don'ts:
When you wake up in the morning and you pass stools once, the second time you get an urge try not to go to the toilet, you are at home anyway, if there is an urgency you have the toilet. Try to bring it down from four times in the morning to two times.
If you are in the office, every time you get an urge don't rush to the bathroom, you have a toilet anyway if there's an emergency. Over some time, you should be able to tame your stomach.
With the help of you taking care of your stomach and homeopathic medicines, IBS can be completely taken care of.
What would I do if I were in your place?
I would for sure not start allopathic medications for IBS as they do not help much. I know that I am not risking anything by giving Homeopathy around 3-6 months to try and get rid of IBS permanently.
Do not start on any allopathic medications until you have given Homeopathy a try for at least about three to six months. Trust me, nothing is going to happen to you in these three to six months' time. But if these medicines can help you avoid allopathic medicines and completely take care of your IBS, isn't it worth giving it a try?
Take care.
