Epilepsy or fits :
You are listening to this because either you or your child or somebody in the family has been diagnosed with epilepsy. We get a lot of people who have just been diagnosed or who have been taking allopathic medications coming to us, asking if we can help them.
How common is epilepsy?
Globally, around 50 million people have epilepsy. In India, more than 12 million people suffer from epilepsy.
Symptoms of epilepsy
You suddenly start convulsing, your body starts to shiver, eyeballs might go upwards, tongue rolls out, you might start to froth, your entire body might shake, and you might become unconscious. You do not know what is happening to you and after the episode is over, you feel sleepy, you might have a headache. This is one type of epilepsy.
The other type of epilepsy is where you are doing something and you suddenly stop and just stare at something. It could be just for a fraction of few seconds, you are talking to the child or adult and the child or the adult is just staring at something, they do not even know that it is happening.
Let us not go into why and how epilepsy happens. Let us see what we can do about it.
Allopathic approach:
You go to the neurologist, he will do an EEG and tell you that there is a problem and you need to be on medicines for the rest of your life. He will put you on anti-epileptics and a lot of other medicines, initially, he will adjust the dosage for a while and then you are all right, you might not have an attack for a year or year and a half.
After sometime when you get an attack or as you grow up, he will adjust your dosage and he will ask you to take it for about four years and at the end of 4 years when you go back to him, he will ask if you had any attack? Yes, one attack, then take it for another four years. I had no attack, why take a chance, take it for another 4 years.
Some people stop the medicines and they are fine but a lot of people keep on taking these medicines. They have a lot of side effects, particularly in children like hyperactivity, weight gain, blurred vision, speech problems, and a lot more.
Homeopathic approach:
We got a lot of cases who have just had one or two attacks and they have not yet started allopathy because they know that once they start allopathy, they have to take it for a long time. Most of the people who have just been diagnosed, recover within six to eight months with homeopathic medicines. If they do not get an attack for a while we leave them alone.
If someone had only one attack, I would not suggest you take any medicines, even homeopathy because there are times where you get an attack and it does not come back again. In case if you get a second attack then you start Homeopathy, Ayurveda, or whatever you want.
If you get multiple attacks in spite of taking homeopathy then you have to take allopathy also because frequent attacks are not good for the brain. We start off with Homeopathy and if you still get frequent attacks then we start Homeopathy and allopathy together and once your epilepsy is in control, we taper off the allopathic medication.
A lot of kids come to me, who get attacks every day or multiple times a day like 30, 40 times a day. We have been able to help a lot of people with epilepsy, particularly children, they respond beautifully to the medications. I am not saying stop or get off the allopathic medication, but if your attacks are continuing despite being on allopathy, that means it is not helping right?
What happens if you leave it alone?
If epilepsy is not treated, it becomes more severe and frequent. You can have seizures throughout your life and multiple times a day.
People who are already on allopathic medication:
People who are already on allopathic medications for the last few years, we give them homeopathic medicines along with allopathy and gradually we reduce the dosage of allopathic medications, and over a period of time we completely stop allopathic medications and you are only on homeopathic medications.
Diet restrictions:
There are no diet restrictions.
Dos and Donts:
I will do meditation, breathing exercises every day. I will make sure that I am sleeping on time and try not to take mental or physical stress because I have seen a lot of people getting epilepsy attacks due to lack of sleep, physical or mental stress. These things aggravate the problem.
What would I do if I was in your place:
I would for sure not start on allopathic medicines. I would first try alternative systems like homeopathy or Ayurveda. I know that I am not risking anything by giving Homeopathy around 3 to 6 months to try and get rid of epilepsy. I would not take anti-epileptics if I am getting only 1 attack in 3 to 4 years. I would go for allopathy only in a worst-case scenario.
Do not start on any allopathic medications until you have given Homeopathy a try for at least about three to six months. Trust me, nothing is going to happen to you in these three to six months time. But if these medicines can help you avoid allopathic medications and get rid of epilepsy for the rest of your life, isn't it worth giving it a try?
Take care. Stay safe.
