Blood pressure or Hypertension:
The moment you are diagnosed with blood pressure, all hell breaks loose, you are like I am done, and this is the end of my life. Now, I have to be careful with the way I live, eat, laugh, and take stress. It is like somebody has tied you around with the rope, isnt that how you feel?
How common is Blood pressure?
In India, around 234 million people suffer from hypertension.
Blood Pressure:
Blood pressure is not a big deal. Before I get into the details of blood pressure, let me give you a background of the word blood pressure. The normal blood pressure 120/80 was discovered around 200 years ago, what they did was they called about a hundred people and checked their blood pressure. They found out that the blood pressure was around 120/80 in about 60% of the people and they decided that this 120/80 is the normal blood pressure.
Remember this was 200 years back and today we still follow 120/80. Let me ask you, 200 years back which means our grandfathers, great-grandfather's, what was their lifestyle, they would be working in the fields all the time, physically 95% more active than us, they had no bus or conveyance, they either used to walk or cycle, How the hell do you expect us to still have 120/80, Does it make sense?
Today if you call hundred people and check their BP, I am sure the average reading would be around 160/100 or 150/100. It does not make sense that you want to have the BP which our grandparents had? Dont you think so?
Unfortunately, the medical world has not done that kind of research to try to raise it. The US and UK have increased the normal reading to 140/90. Statistics say that 70% of the Indian population who live in the rural areas do not get their BP checked even once in their lifetime and they continue to live as long as people living in the urban areas. Trust me, they have a much healthier life than us.
I have a family who comes to me, the wife and the two kids used to take medicines, but the husband never used to take medicines but he used to come to me and say doctor please check my BP. I will check it and for about a year this continued and finally after a year or year and a half, I said congratulations, you have got BP.
This is what most of us do, we live our life constantly checking what is wrong with us and forget to enjoy life, I am not saying BP is not dangerous, but there are two kinds of BP, one is essential BP, the other is the secondary BP which comes because of underlying conditions like vascular diseases or other diseases, you need to be concerned about secondary BP, otherwise you do not have to worry and keep checking your BP to see when you will get BP.
A lot of people who come to me for the first time, when I check their BP, it is around 180/120, they don't even know that they have BP but they continue to be fine. Now, you will tell me that those are the people who will drop dead. How many people are dropping dead like that for you to be scared and live your life like that? If you are meant to drop dead, you will anyway drop dead, not because of BP but because of something else.
Allopathic approach:
Once you are diagnosed with BP, the only solution in allopathy is to put you on tablets and keep monitoring your BP every few weeks or few months and adjust your BP medications all your life, there is no end to it.
We see youngsters around 20 years of age taking BP medications, but when you take BP medications for a long period of time, it causes a lot of side effects.
If you casually got your BP checked and even if it is a little high, let's say around 140 or 150/100, what is your hurry to start medications? But if you got it checked because you have a headache, you are feeling irritable, losing your temper that means the BP is affecting you, go ahead and start medication. Here, do not start allopathic medicines immediately, try alternative systems of medicine like Homeopathy and Ayurveda, a little bit of diet, exercise and if it does not come down in 6 months to 1 year time, then start on allopathy.
Nothing is going to happen if you do not take BP medication for 6 months or 1 year, you are not going to get a stroke, one-sided paralysis, or a brain haemorrhage. It is not as deadly as it sounds.
Homeopathic approach:
We have been able to help a lot of people who come to us with BP. People who come to us initially without starting allopathic medications, for most of them we can control their BP with homeopathic medication alone.
For people who already take allopathic medication for blood pressure, we start them on homeopathy along with allopathy, and we keep monitoring their blood pressure and over some time we get them off their allopathic medication.
When do you need to be worried?
If your BP is way high, let's say around 180/110 or 190/120, then you need to be worried because you might be having some underlying condition. There are many instances where our BP goes up because of emotional disturbances, here you do not need medication. You just need to take care of your emotional problems. Don't you agree?
People who are already on allopathic medications:
(We make them stop their allopathic medication and we ask them to take Homeopathy for three months. In some cases where you have been taking allopathic meds for a long period of time, we start homeopathic medicines along with allopathy, and over some time, we taper off their allopathic medicines. Most people respond within 3 to 6months.)
What happens if you leave your BP alone?
Nothing, except in few people who are aged or have an underlying condition, it can cause problems. If you start BP medication at a very young age, by the time you are 40-45 you might get kidney and liver problems. Either way, you will end up in some problem. According to what my experience has taught me, ignorance is bliss.
Diet restrictions:
People say salt is a major thing that needs to be avoided. I would say reduce your salt intake, I am not saying stop eating salt, if you stop your salt and eat your food what taste will it have? What is the point in eating?
You need to bring a balance to all these things, be disciplined, eat within the limits, check the diet I have uploaded on my website- that is something that can really help.
Dos and Donts:
Start exercising, make it a part of your daily routine.
Do not be in a hurry to start allopathic medicines before giving alternative systems a try for few months.
What would I do if I was in your place:
Do not take allopathic medicines for your BP unless you have given alternative systems of medicines like Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Unani a try. I know that I am not risking anything by giving Homeopathy around 3 to 6 months to try and get rid of BP.
Do not start on any allopathic medications until you have given Homeopathy a try for at least about three to six months. Trust me, nothing is going to happen to you in these three to six months time. But if these medicines can help you manage your Blood pressure and avoid allopathic medications for the rest of your life, isn't it worth giving it a try?
Take care. Stay safe.
